TOPAZ, Calif. — Update, 10 a.m., Saturday — Highway 395 has reopened to traffic in both directions near the Nevada state line.
The Slinkard Fire grew to 7,881 acres Friday but crews have gained 20 percent containment on the blaze.
Today’s fire priorities are control the fire’s north-west spread which could threaten residential areas watershed, cultural and heritage sites. Structure defense resources remain in place in Holbrook Highlands and the area of Topaz Lake and Highway 395.
The fire, which started in Slinkard Valley Tuesday afternoon from an apparent lightning strike, jumped Highway 89 Wednesday afternoon and moved east toward the town of Topaz, Calif.
The Sierra Front 2 (Type 3) Incident Management Team took command of the incident Wednesday night.
