Good Morning, Carson Valley: Aug. 9

by Joey Crandall, · 1 min read

GARDNERVILLE, Nev . — Jim Burnett, who taught music and directed the band at Carson Valley Middle School for 23 years, died last Friday at the age of 70. His obituary can be found here.

I had Mr. Burnett for seventh- and eighth-grade, and small portions of sixth-grade — and frankly, at the time, I was terrified of him.

He set high standards and held to them. A strict, bold and challenging voice can be a hard thing for a jittery teen to adapt to, particularly when it comes to performing — and receiving critique — in front of your peers.

The prevailing thing I can trace directly to him is that it simply isn’t enough to do the best you can — you have to aspire to what surpasses your current abilities, otherwise you won’t grow and you won’t get any better. That failure isn’t an end, but an opportunity to succeed where you previously thought you couldn’t.

He was a good man who taught me, and much of this Valley, far more than music. He’ll be missed greatly, but his lessons will be carried on by a great many.

Tuesday’s flash flood watch passed with little incident, or precipitation. The valley, and the greater region, are under a flash flood watch again today, though, running from 1 to 10 p.m. with a 50 percent chance of severe thunderstorms striking the area.

That should be the last of the current set, though, with clear skies and highs in the low 90s forecast Thursday through this weekend.

Johnson Lane residents are invited to learn about the Johnson Lane Area Drainage Master Plan (ADMP) from 5 to 7 p.m. tonight at the CVIC Hall in downtown Minden. Past flood experiences, comments, and concerns from residents are welcome and needed in order to create a comprehensive drainage master plan for Johnson Lane. Read more here.

The Douglas County Public Library hosts toddler storytime for children 18 months to 3 years of age at 10:30 a.m. today.  Children will participate in music and felt-board stories.  The Minden Library is located at 1625 Library Lane.

The Sierra Chef Farm to Fork Farmers Market will be 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. today at Lampe Park.

TOCCATA Tahoe Symphony 12th Summer MusicFest will present Beethoven & the Romantics at Shepherd of Sierra Church at 7 p.m., tonight. Pieces include:  Bruch: Violin Concerto #1 -Alex Eisenberg, violin;  Mendelssohn: Piano Concerto #1 Robert Miller, piano;  Beethoven: Symphony #6 Pastoral; Brian Fox, concertmaster. Read more here.

That’s a full lid for this morning. Take care out there and have a great day.
