RENO, Nev. — The National Weather Service has issued a fire weather watch for Northern Nevada and the surrounding region effective Wednesday afternoon through Wednesday evening as thunderstorms and strong outflow winds are in the forecast.
The storms are expected to bring minimal rainfall, but abundant lightning with erratic winds gusting 35 to 45 mph.
Crews will be on alert for new fire starts, which combined with the outflow winds could cause a fire to grow rapidly in size and intensity before first responders can reach or contain them.
Outdoor activities such as yard work, target shooting (which has already been temporarily banned on forest service land in the Carson Ranger district), or campfires that could cause a spark near dry vegetation are discouraged.
