GARDNERVILLE, Nev. — Willow Creek in Lampe Park received its annual population boost Thursday as 4,000 fish from the Mason Valley Fish Hatchery and 500 pounds of fish from a hatchery in Oregon were planted in preparation for this weekend’s Kids Fishing Derby.
This year’s derby, the 28th annual edition, will have approximately 1,000 participants between Saturday and Sunday, according to event organizers. Registration will be accepted at the Lampe Park Pavillion on Friday until dusk for ages 3-12.
The derby starts at 8 a.m. Saturday and Sunday, and most sessions still have openings. All participants must be pre-registered.
More than 100 raffle prizes will be doled out during the derby, including marquee grand prize items such as a street-legal Mad Dog scooter and two children’s quad all-terrain vehicles (one 50cc and one 150cc).
The event had the support of 176 sponsors this year.
Classes from Gardnerville Elementary School were in attendance Thursday at Lampe as the Mason Valley Fish Hatchery truck delivered its fish.
