Gardening workshops for elementary students will be offered at the Heritage Park Gardens in downtown Gardnerville, starting April 18th with Ready, Set Grow!.
Groups will meet the 3rd Saturday of every month through September, except for the month of August when there will be a field trip to Jacobs Berry Farm on August 8th instead. Kindergarten 2nd graders will meet from 10-11:30am and the 3rd-5th graders will meet noon 1:30. Workshops are limited to 15 students and led by Master Gardeners with teaching experience. A parent or guardian will need to stay on site during the class.
Besides the actual planting and harvesting of the gardens, the kids will get some science/gardening theory and nutrition info, do hands-on projects, and have fun exploring ways to grow and preserve food.
Heritage Park Community Gardens is a project of Main Street Gardnerville in cooperation with the Town of Gardnerville. The HPG committee secured a Specialty Crop Block Grant from USDA to build the childrens garden in 2014 and begin classes this year.
