Former Douglas High School football coach Bill Coverley died Saturday, March 14, 2015. He had reportedly been battling cancer.

Coverley was the coach of the Douglas High football team from 1970-1984 and a founding member and chaperone of the Saturday Ski Club, among many other things. He led the football team to the program’s only state title in 1974 and compiled a record of 78 wins, 59 losses and one tie.

A service for Coverley has been scheduled for 11 a.m. Monday at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 891 Mahogany Drive.

Friends and family have been posting memories and thoughts about him on social media, remembering him as a tremendous teacher, mentor, coach, church leader and family man. Here are some of the comments:

I had the great pleasure of playing center on that 1974 championship team. Bill Coverley had the unique ability to bring the best out of each of us, and I was but a small cog in a group of uniquely talented individuals he wove into something very special. Charmed times, though special people like Bill Coverley made it into something more than it would have ever been without him. How priceless is that? I am forever indebted.Jacques Etchegoyhen

I can honestly say that I am who I am today because of this man’s influence on my life. From Sat. Ski club to our annual BYU Football camp, I have many, many fond memories… He was a father figure to many of us who did not have a father at home. Made me proud to be a Douglas Tiger…. He left us way too early. So sorry for Rod and Dan. Peace be with you coach. You live on in our memory. — Terrence Martin, #52 Class of 1986

Awesome man, great coach, fantastic father… Prayers are with you all Dan and Rod.. Family loved ones…Bill Simpson

He was and amazing man didn’t know him as a coach but I did know him as President Coverly, an awesome religious leader. Met my wife at his house during a church meeting.Dana Kincaid

This is how my son learned his love of skiing then snowboarding. Thanks for the lessons learned — Linda Adie McGovern

  1. This is such sad news. Bill, Sandee, and I all started teaching the same year in Gardnerville/Minden, and became friends. I always enjoyed Bill’s sense of humor; he will be missed. All the best to Sandee and family.
