SACRAMENTO, Calif. — The Douglas High softball team took seventh at a tournament in Sacramento, Calif., over the weekend, winning three of five games.
Douglas fell 5-1 to St. Francis in the tournament opener but bounced back to defeat West Campus 2-0 on Day 1. The Tigers then defeated Vacaville 7-4 and lost to Ponderosa 3-0.
Douglas wrapped up the tournament with a 21-1 thumping of McQueen.
During the tournament, Allison Meyer belted a pair of home runs and Kyle Swan hit a home run and a triple.
Kaitlyn Bowman went 2-0 in the circle, giving up just one run. Kali Sargent pitched Douglas to a win against one of the top teams in the tournament.
“My goals for the tournament were to get a good look at different combinations of defense so we can solidify our lineup once league reconvenes,” Douglas coach Rob Parks said. “We were able to see everyone hit and play defense. I feel like we were able to accomplish this goal.
“We played three really good teams from California and went 1-2 against them. The one game we won against Vacaville, everything came together — defense, hitting, base running and pitching. That is what we will need to beat Spanish Springs at home this Thursday.”
At the JV level, Douglas lost to Reed by one run in the championship game of the Reed JV Preseason Tournament.
