GARDNERVILLE, Nev. (December 4, 2014) – The 25th year of Project Santa Claus is in full swing in the Carson Valley, and two donations were just made to ensure that the Kiwanis’ special Bike and Helmet project continues with the tradition. Carson Valley Medical Center donated $1,000.00 and Heritage Bank donated $500.00 to purchase new bike helmets for youth in need.
The helmets compliment the Kiwanis Club bicycle and tricycle project that traditionally coincides with Project Santa. Over the past three years, an annual average 225 helmets have been gifted to youth in the Carson Valley. The Bikes and Helmets Project promotes physical activity and healthy lifestyles, while also promoting bicycle safety awareness amongst kids.
According to the Bicycle Helmet Safety Institute, head injuries are responsible for around three-quarters of deaths among bicyclists involved in crashes. Yet studies have shown that wearing a helmet reduced the risk of head or brain injury by approximately two-thirds or more.
Carson Valley Medical Center is a non-profit medical facility that provides acute and ICU care, surgery, 24-hour emergency services, and outpatient services. A partnership of Barton Health and Renown Health, Carson Valley Medical Center’s mission is to promote the health and wellness of the Carson Valley.
