What Is Main Street Gardnerville And How Can You Get Involved?

by Paula Lochridge, Main Street Gardnerville

The Main Street approach advocates a return to community self-reliance, local empowerment, and the rebuilding of traditional commercial districts based on their unique assets.

Main Street Gardnerville is a non-profit corporation and, with the exception of one paid staff member.  We are an all-volunteer organization of approximately 100 individuals who give their time and talents to various projects and events for the purpose of revitalizing our downtown district. The money raised through various events and projects covers expenses and goes back into the community in support of our Main Street Gardnerville Mission.

The mission of the Main Street Gardnerville Program, in partnership with the town, county, business and community, is to revitalize downtown Gardnerville utilizing design, organization, promotion & economic district vitality to develop the unique identity and preserve the historic nature of our community.

Main Street Gardnerville works very closely with the Town of Gardnerville but is its own entity. Various projects of the program include the Flower Baskets; Revolving Loan Fund; Events such as Thirsty Third Thursdays and Cash Mobs; Heritage Park Gardens Project; Market Analysis of the District; Installation of Street Furniture to create a more pedestrian friendly downtown; Sidewalk Gallery, giving an abandoned building a new purpose; and much more.

As a unique preservation-based economic development tool, the Main Street Four-Point Approach® is the foundation for a local initiative to revitalize its district by leveraging local assets—from cultural or architectural heritage to local enterprises and community pride.  The four points of the Main Street approach work together to build a sustainable and complete community revitalization effort.  Those four points are:  Organization, Promotion, Design & District Vitality (Economic Restructuring).

A special volunteer orientation is planned for Thursday, November 13th at 5:30 pm.  This hour long event will educate you on the Main Street program and inform you on the various ways you can volunteer in your community.  The meeting will be held at the Main Street Gardnerville offices, located within the Gardnerville Town Hall at 1407 Hwy 395 N.
