Commemorative re-run celebrates Pony Express 154th Anniversary
The National Pony Express Association’s annual commemorative re-run departs from Sacramento June 11 on a 10-day journey to St. Joseph, Mo.
In the interim, more than 600 riders and horses will combine to cover 1,966 miles in back-to-back legs 24 hours a day along the route of the Pony Express National Historic Trail.
Riders carry commemorative letters in a mochila, which covers over the horses saddle and acts as a mail bag.
The ride is tentatively scheduled to cross the Nevada State Line at Woodfords at 9 a.m. Thursday (June 12) and pass through Genoa at 11:30 a.m.
The association warns that anyone wishing to see the Pony Express riders should allow for a two-hour window on either side of the anticipated arrival.
Reports from the trail will be available at http://www.xphomestation.com/2014-reports.html
