With attentions turned toward the imprints left on the school, Douglas High’s class of 2014 accepted its diplomas Friday  evening.

“Find out what your legacy is,” class speaker Rachel Murphey encouraged her classmates. “Don’t leave any questions. Don’t leave any ‘what ifs.'”

Murphey, the evening’s first speaker, began her speech by turning her camera phone on the crowd and taking a ‘selfie’ of the graduating class of 350-plus.

Corey Markwardt-Abrigo, the night’s second student speaker, spoke of an impoverished childhood with parents who were in and out of his life. Yet, he still graduated with an advanced diploma.

“We need to take accountability for our actions,” he said. “I escaped stress through education.

“You will remember this as the day you were set into the world with community and family as support.”

MIKEEddyAmericanFamilyInsuranceGardnervilleMinden022014Douglas High principal Marty Swisher encouraged the class to hold on to the final moment of high school before heading out into the world.

“This will be the last time you all are together as one class,” Swisher said.

Valedictorians and twin sisters Gabby and Maria Munoz Robles regaled the crowd with a speech full of jokes and laughter while they held posters with their respective names on them.

“After our teachers begging us to get our names tattooed to our foreheads for so long, we thought we would help you out with some visual aids,” they said.

Class speaker Trent DeGiovanni invoked the words of the Greek poet Pindar, saying “Become who you are.”

“Who we are has little to do with where we are going,” DeGiovanni said. “Rather, it is where we come from.”
