Good Morning, Carson Valley: Dec. 11

by Joey Crandall,

There was some commotion in Winhaven Tuesday night just before 9 p.m. with emergency services vehicles crowding to the neighborhood. We missed the call, but heard about the sirens from some readers. We’ll be checking around this morning to see if we can figure out what happened.

UPDATE: Sgt. Pat Brooks of the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office has informed us the incident was on White Oak Loop. There was a call for a structure fire. Smoke in the house. FD arrived and found the source of the smoke was from a log burning in the fireplace  was not sufficiently vented. No injuries.

The Record-Courier is reporting that a break in the fire sprinkler line at Carson Valley Middle School caused water to be shut off to a wing of the school on Tuesday. School is in session there this morning.

It’s cold again this morning, but we seem to be through the worst of it for now. Today’s high is supposed to be 37 degrees (currently 15), gradually moving up to the low 50s by early next week.

The Douglas girls basketball team defeated Reed 58-53 last night in Sparks, marking the first time in 10 years the Lady Tigers defeated the Raiders.

I was there the last time it happened, ironically, also in Sparks. It was the 2002-03 season and Reed was as strong as any team in the state heading into the playoffs, riding a win streak somewhere around 18 games. Douglas came in as the No. 4 seed out of the Sierra League and completely shocked the Raiders. Douglas went on to advance to the regional final (losing narrowly to Reno) and qualify for the state tournament.

Douglas County Manager Steve Mokrohisky is on The Record-Courier’s Running Commentary this morning from 10:30 to 11:30 for a live Q&A. This is an excellent community resource where you can ask literally anything having to do with Douglas County or local government. He may not have an immediate answer for you, but he’ll track it down. Go to for the forum.

That’s a full lid for this morning. Take care out there and have a great day!
