Girls Basketball: Douglas upends Reed to remain unbeaten

Staff Reports

The Douglas girls basketball team kept its perfect start to the season intact Tuesday night, defeating Reed 58-53 in Sparks.

It was the first time Douglas had beaten Reed since the 2002-03 season. The Lady Tigers improved to 6-0 on the season with the win and will not play again until a league game against Galena next week.

“It was quite a game,” Douglas coach Werner Christen said. “The girls were real business-like about it. I really think they walked in there expecting to win.”

Douglas improved to 6-0 with the win, matching its best start since 2007.

Both teams were without key players as Reed was missing UConn-bound guard Gabby Williams and Douglas was without point guard McKenna Kynett, who injured her ankle over the weekend.

“We were a different team without McKenna, no question, but everyone stepped up and the kids did fine,” Christen said. ”

Leonna Mortimer led the Tigers with 22 points while Corryne Millett  had 17 points and played a strong defensive game.

“Corryne just had a fantastic night,” Christen said. “She caused havoc all game.”

Jessie Jim finished with 11 points, including a pair of 3-pointers.

“We were talking tonight, I think Jessie has more threes in six games by herself than the whole team had all of last year,” Christen said.

Kelly Sonnemann ran a strong point for Douglas while Katie McCullough and Kassidy Freitas turned in strong defensive efforts.

“So many kids were doing the little things right,” Cbristen said. “Katie was making the extra pass, so was Maddy Lowe.”

Reed built a 13-point lead in the second quarter, but Douglas came back to cut it to one point. A three-pointer at the buzzer put Reed up by four at halftime.

“We went to a halfcourt trap on defense, but we extended it a bit,” Christen said. The kids did a really good job of rotating back and we ended up outscoring them 18-8 in the third quarter.”

Douglas extended its lead to as much as 12 points before settling on the five-point win.
