It was close for about a quarter.
Then the Douglas girls basketball team put its collective foot on the gas pedal.
Douglas turned an 8-6 first quarter lead into a 47-20 romp over Spanish Springs in Minden Wednesday night, riding a 17-4 second quarter to the big lead. The Tigers used their stifling full-court press defense to create transition buckets, rolling up a quick 10-0 run to open the second quarter.
Jessie Jim and Leonna Mortimer led the way on the score sheet, putting up 14 and 13 points respectively while the Lady Tigers dominated the game on the glass, grabbing 34 rebounds. Jim also hit a pair of 3-pointers.
Maddy Lowe and Katie McCullough each had seven points, and Corryne Millett, Madison Ryan and McKenna Kynett each chipped in two points in the win.
Austin Evans scored 22 points and James Herrick added another 13 as Douglas picked up a 61-51 win over Spanish Springs.
Evans hit three 3-pointers in the win, AJ Pfaffenberger scored nine points, Pat Johnson scored eight, Alex Tessmann had six and Jaden Wass scored three.
