The success of the Main Street Gardnerville Flower Committee cannot happen without the support and participation from three local high schools. We, the Flower Committee volunteers are indebted to staff and students from: Douglas High School, Smith Valley School, and China Spring Youth Camp/Aurora Pines Girls Facility. Without their dedicated participation in ensuring the hanging flower baskets and adopt-a-pot flowers continue to look more attractive each year, our town would not be a destination highlight for residents and tourists during the summer.
Two very exceptional students deserve special recognition for their efforts this year. Andrew Goedecke, a senior at Douglas High School, took on full responsibility for leading a team of students to ensure that 30 flower baskets thrived under their care. The proof of this dedication hung on light poles this summer.
Skyler Wellnitz, a Junior at Smith Valley School, under the direction of her Ag/FFA instructor, ordered and planted the seeds which eventually became the plants for all the flowers in the Adopt-a-Pots. There were a total of 17 plants in each pot. This was Skyler’s first attempt at something so massive and the success of her efforts was showcased along Main Street all summer long.
An additional special thank you goes to Jeff Gorton, Program Manager at China Spring/Aurora Pines who oversaw the staff’s efforts to grow the flower baskets again this year. Without his dedication and green thumb expertise, we would not have had enough beautiful baskets to fill the flag poles on Main Street.
Another thank you must go out to the Town of Gardnerville for their support and help with pick up, watering and the taking down of the baskets each summer.
And, of course, thanks to all of the sponsors of the flower baskets and adopt-a-pots who keep this project “blooming”…
