It’s the first day of school for kids all across the Valley in the Douglas County School District. I can’t recall ever having a first day that was this overcast.
The National Weather Service has issued a hazardous weather outlook (which we wrote about at this link), with heavy rain in the forecast today (although a 40 percent chance of a precipitation). Thunder storms and rain showers should continue into Wednesday.
Storms in the Truckee area last night pushed a heavy cloud of smoke from the American Fire into the area. National Weather Service posted a pretty amazing time-lapse video of Reno getting swamped:
Speaking of thunderstorms, lightning strikes over the Pine Nut Mountains Saturday afternoon and evening sparked several fires in the area, all of which local crews were able to contain rapidly. I’ve said it before, we are blessed with an extraordinary group of firefighters in the area.
Minden-based auto racer Kyle Gimple took third place at Kansas Speedway over the weekend. We’ll expand on that a bit as the day progresses.
Also, today we are debuting our first contest. Starting at 8 a.m. we’ll begin a guessing game of sorts, and we’re going to call it Movie Monday, taking place every week and giving away a bunch of movie tickets.
Our grand prize is a date night package with a pair of movie tickets from Ironwood 8 Cinemas and a medium pizza from Minden Pizza Factory.
For the contest itself, we’ll give you a clue about every hour starting at 8 a.m. and you have to tell us what it is, specifically, we are looking for. The first five correct answers this week will receive a pair of movie tickets. The third person with the correct answer this week wins the grand prize.
We’ll be conducting on Facebook (www.facebook.com/cvalleytimes), so make sure to check in throughout the day and venture a guess or two, or 30.
