It was a busy day across the board yesterday and that will only continue today.
There were a number of smoke checks and a small fire during yesterday’s brief thunder storm out over the Pine Nuts, but nothing amounted to anything of consequence. There was also a two-vehicle accident at Highway 88 and Waterloo just after 5:30 p.m. yesterday, and while there was moderate to major damage of both cars, no one needed emergency transport.
The Hot August Nights Poker Run brought hundreds of classic cars through downtown Minden and my family had a lovely evening picnic at Lampe Park that was interrupted by the angriest yellow jacket I’ve seen all summer.
You’ll hear some booms between 8 and 10 a.m. today as Heavenly Mountain Resort is blasting on both sides of the mountain for boulder control.
Town of Gardnerville has Movies in the Park tonight, presenting “We Bought A Zoo” for your viewing pleasure. It stars Matt Damon, Scarlett Johansson and the most self-explanatory movie title since “Snakes on a Plane.” Showtime is at dusk, which should fall sometime between 8 and 8:30 p.m.
I’d list everything going on this weekend, but there is a lot, so I’ll break it out in shorter briefs throughout the day.
The Nevada Interscholastic Activities Association allows for the start of football heat acclimation workouts Saturday. The Douglas football team opens camp Monday with final conditioning testing. Two-a-day workout sessions start Tuesday. They’ll put on full pads starting Aug. 19, which is also the first day of school this year.
We’re looking at a high of 81 degrees today with another small battery of thunderstorms and showers, which could show up later tonight.
High of 81 expected again Saturday, and then we’ll be looking at high 80s and clear skies through most of next week.
We got a batch of reader photos from people out and about in the region and beyond. Chris Dickerson sent us this picture of the thunder storm at Hot August Nights in Reno:
And Matt Wayne sent us some photos from his recent trip to Yosemite including a bear, a deer (today’s featured image) and a visit from the Aspen Fire Smoke.
