We’re off and running for our third week of business.
The best news we can bring you from the weekend is that the Bison Fire was officially ruled as 100 percent contained and the site was turned over to a Type 3 team.
Firefighters will finish rehabbing the fire line and will be on site watching for any hot spots that might flare up. Most resources have been released and made available for other fires.
Through the duration of the fire, four firefighter injuries were reported (two twisted knees, a twisted ankle and one report of breathing problems).
Cost, to date, to fight the fire is estimated at $7.7 million. Final size was set at 24,136 acres and the one old mining structure remained the only destroyed structure.
In it’s final fire update, the Sierra Front Interagency Dispatch said, ” Mike Whalen’s Type 2 Incident Command Team 3 would like to thank the communities of Gardnerville and Minden for their support and hospitality.”
The Carson Valley HotShots hosted the Northern Sierra State Fastpitch Tournament over the weekend at Stodick Park, and Carson Valley’s 14U and 12U squads each won a state title. Congratulations, girls! We’ll have more on the story as we get more information. We’re told that the 8U team took second place. Feel free to pass along any photos or details from the tournament.
Douglas County’s Valley Visioning Workshops are set for today at the Carson Valley Inn with sessions set for 10 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. Each session will last an hour and a half with portions set aside for open house, presentation and public input. The purpose is for residents of the County to get a peek at what the future of the Valley looks like and to get a chance to offer their ideas and input in helping to shape that future. Workshops are free and the public is encouraged to be there!
We’ve got some fun stories planned throughout the week, so plan on checking back for those. This weekend brings with it two unique events — the Little City Stage Race cycling criterium and road race in downtown Minden and Diamond Valley, and the Minden Ranch Rodeo at the Douglas County Fairgrounds.
