Bison Fire continues to release resources

by Dorothy Harvey, Sierra Front Interagency Dispatch

Gardnerville, Nev. – Great Basin Management Type 2 Team 3, operating under Incident Commander Mike Whalen, reports fire fighters have started mopping-up and are conducting fire-line rehab.  There are still several hot spots that are being worked on the north and southeast edges of the fire.  The winds have not been a factor in fire behavior today.  All evacuations and road closures have been lifted.

The fire is now 80-percent contained with a full containment target date of July 14. As the containment percent rises the resources will be released from the Bison fire and made available for other fires.

The spike camp and helibase in Smith Valley will be closed today and the fire fighters will return to the Incident Command Post (ICP) in Gardnerville.

The number of personnel assigned to the incident is 970 and shrinking.  There has been two firefighter injuries (twisted knee and breathing problems) reported.

The cost, to date, of fighting this fire is $5,657,204.

We continue to ask that, for your safety and the safety of the firefighters, the public stay away from the fire area.

No residences were damaged or lost in the Bison fire but to lessen the possibility of your home being damaged in another fire, please clear 30 feet around your residences, “reduce the fuel, reduce the risk.”  Go to the Firewise link at for further information.

Fire information will continue to be updated at,, and on the Sierra Front Wildfire Cooperators and Douglas County’s pages on Facebook. A fire information phone line is also being staffed from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. at 775-782-0032.
