Progress takes a step back on containing the Bison Fire

by Dorothy Harvey, Sierra Front Wildfire Cooperators

Gardnerville, Nev. – Great Basin Management Type II Team, operating under Incident Commander Mike Whalen, reports fire fighters made progress overnight even though the fire remained active.  The fire has been downgraded to15-percent contained with the wind event that occurred yesterday afternoon.  The new containment date is July 14.

The fire was extremely active on the northeast side yesterday afternoon and into the evening.  Contingency plans remain in place for positioning of both air and ground resources should the fire move further to the east.

No injuries have been reported, but the fire ran through the Slate Mine area destroying several old structures.  The number of structures destroyed is not known at this time.

Pine Nut Road remains closed to non-residents at the intersection of Out-R-Way.  A voluntary evacuation notice remains in effect for about 20 structures in the area.

A number of private ATVs, motorcycles and other vehicles were seen very close to the fire area.  We ask that, for your safety and the safety of the firefighters, the public stay away from the fire area.

Fire information will continue to be updated at www.sierrafront.net, www.inciweb.org, and on the Sierra Front Wildfire Cooperators and Douglas County’s pages on Facebook.  A fire information phone line is also being staffed from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. at 775-782-1428.
